teaching essential life skills
GaitWay
Dream Makers
At GaitWay, our Dream Maker program is what started it all. Watching the natural transformation that the barn assistants at Grit & Grace Ranch underwent, simply by working shifts at the barn, led us to create a structured program where we can use horsepower to empower.
The Dream Maker program is an equine facilitated learning program that teaches girls ages 13-17 essential life skills like work ethic, discipline, empathy, grit, responsibility, communication, teamwork, time management, initiative, leadership, and much more.
GaitWay Essential Life Skills
Responsibility
Caring for animals, especially animals as large as horses, takes a lot of responsibility. Dream Makers learn to care for the horses in all aspects, from feeding, health checks, exercising, and grooming, to cleaning tack and scooping manure. Once they are through their initial training and learning process, the girls then go on to fully execute horse care independently, which gives them a sense of accomplishment and proves that they can learn–and do–hard things.
Teamwork & Communication
Running a ranch takes an incredible amount of teamwork. To complete their work and make sure the horses are cared for, the Dream Makers have to come together on things like time management, project planning, communication, and initiative. It requires them to be motivated self-starters who are willing to be good leaders and good teammates.
Perseverance & Grit
All of our Dream Makers take horsemanship lessons, both on the ground and in the saddle. These lessons teach them perseverance and grit. Handling and riding horses is hard and humbling. The Dream Makers learn to literally and figuratively get back in the saddle after each setback.
Work Ethic & Discipline
Running a ranch takes an incredible amount of teamwork. To complete their work and make sure the horses are cared for, the Dream Makers have to come together on things like time management, project planning, communication, and initiative. It requires them to be motivated self-starters who are willing to be good leaders and good teammates.
Confidence & Self Esteem
We believe, and have seen firsthand, that there’s nothing more confidence building for a young girl than learning to lead and become partners with a horse. Confident young girls make good decisions, don’t easily stray from their values, advocate for themselves, and quite frankly, go on to change the world.
Leadership
All of the above skills combine to create the next generation of strong leaders. Leaders worth following. Leaders who lead with integrity, kindness, care, respect, and empathy.
To continue to do this impactful work, we need your support. It takes a village to raise strong girls, and we would love for you to be a part of our GaitWay village.
The Dream Maker Program is rooted
In Our Core Values
In November of 2023, we gather our current dream makers together. These girls ranged from 14-17 and had been in the program from anywhere between 12 months to 4 years. We asked them, at the core, aside from learning and growing about ranch life, what’s most important to you? After some thought provoking conversations, they came up with a list of values they felt everyone involved in GaitWay should have, and we agree! Our COURE VALUES are Kindness, Caring, Honesty, Patience, Positivity, Respect, Dedication, Discipline, Work Ethic, and of course Fun 🙂
